During the Group of Seven (G7) summit on Thursday, June 13, US President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a significant security agreement, signaling a unified stance against Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“He cannot wait us out,” Biden declared. “He cannot divide us.”
Zelenskyy emphasized the significance of the agreement, saying it underscored the “credibility of American support for our Ukrainian independence.”
"Today is a truly historic day. We have signed the strongest agreement between Ukraine and the US since our independence," Zelenskyy stated. "This is an agreement on steps to guarantee sustainable peace and therefore it benefits everyone in the world because the Russian war in Ukraine is a real, real global threat."
Since the outbreak of war with Russia in 2022, Kyiv has signed fifteen bilateral security agreements with countries including the UK, France, Germany, and Italy.
Unlike these other agreements, the pact with the US does not obligate America to defend Ukraine if attacked. However, it could facilitate peace negotiations with Russia by ensuring Ukraine of support in case of further aggression, according to The Guardian.
The agreement does not require Congressional approval and could potentially be reversed by a future administration, the report noted.
Biden previously indicated that the security guarantees for Ukraine would be similar to those for Israel, involving financial and military aid, and the possibility of joint weapons programs.
