US President Joe Biden has made his first public comment regarding his son Hunter's conviction on federal firearm charges, firmly stating he will not grant a pardon. This statement comes after Hunter Biden was found guilty of three federal offenses in Delaware, culminating in a highly emotional trial that revealed many personal details about the Biden family.
During a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the 81-year-old Biden praised his son as “one of the brightest, most decent men I know” but asserted, “I will not pardon him.”
Expressing pride in his son, Biden said, “I’m extremely proud of my son Hunter. He has overcome an addiction, and he’s one of the brightest, most decent men I know.” He added, “I am satisfied that I’m not going to do anything — I said I’d abide by the jury decision. I will do that. And I will not pardon him.”
Previously, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre had indicated that Biden had not ruled out commuting Hunter’s sentence on the gun charge.
In his remarks, Biden emphasized the importance of respecting the judicial process, contrasting his stance with former President Donald Trump’s claims of a “rigged” justice system in response to his own legal challenges.
