Biafra Prime Minister Simon Ekpa and the Biafra Government in Exile have issued a directive to the people of Biafra, urging them to refrain from participating in any national holidays observed within the former territories of Nigeria, which they assert no longer exist within Biafra's boundaries.
In a recent statement, Prime Minister Ekpa declared that Nigerian public holidays are no longer recognized as official national days within Biafra territory. The only national holiday acknowledged by Biafra is May 30th, which holds significant importance for the Biafran people. Ekpa also noted that Biafrans will continue to observe international holidays while the Biafra government plans for official national holidays to be established upon the declaration of full independence.
This announcement comes in the wake of Nigeria's declaration of June 12th as a public holiday. The Biafra government has made it clear that Biafrans are free to go about their business without interruption on this date. They emphasized that Nigerian state actors, who are deemed to be operating illegally within Biafra territory, may observe their holidays, but their presence is expected to diminish as the process of delegitimization progresses.
The Biafra government’s stance highlights their ongoing efforts to assert autonomy and reject Nigerian sovereignty over the Biafra region.
