Nigeria braces for a seismic wave of dissent as a coalition of civil society organizations rallies citizens for a mass protest against soaring hardships and acute hunger under the helm of President Bola Tinubu's administration.
Scheduled for Wednesday, June 12, the Take-It-Back Movement (TIB), the African Action Congress party (AAC), the Joint Action Front (JAF), the Education Rights Campaign (ERC), the Socialist Workers and the Youth League (SWL), and PRP Vanguard have united under the banner "Enough is Enough to Hardship and Hunger, Great Nigerian People."
Since President Tinubu's controversial removal of fuel subsidies on May 29, 2023, Nigerians have grappled with an unprecedented surge in living costs. Fuel, food, transport, electricity, school fees, and other essentials have skyrocketed, eclipsing the means of the average citizen.
"We are hungry. Our children are hungry. Our youth are becoming criminals and prostitutes. Things are hard," lamented the coalition in a joint statement.
Accusing the ruling elite of feasting on the nation's resources while the populace starves, the groups called out President Tinubu and other officials for turning Nigeria's wealth into their personal treasury.
"Their friends in business like Aliko Dangote and other thieves are also smiling to the bank. Yet they tell us to tighten our belts," the statement read.
In a call to action, the coalition urged Nigerians not to passively endure their plight but to mobilize for change. "Let's take Nigeria back from the capitalist vultures who have bled it dry. The time for system change is Now."
As tensions mount and frustrations boil over, all eyes are on Wednesday's protest, which promises to be a pivotal moment in Nigeria's struggle against entrenched inequality and hardship. Stay tuned for updates as the nation stands on the brink of a historic demonstration for change.
