Three Valencia Fans Sentenced for Racist Abuse Towards Vinicius Junior
Three Valencia fans have received eight-month jail sentences for racially abusing Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior, marking Spain's first conviction of its kind, according to La Liga.
The individuals, whose identities were not disclosed, were found guilty of violating moral integrity with the aggravating factor of racially motivated discrimination, as stated by a Valencia court.
In addition to the jail terms, they were handed a two-year ban from attending matches. However, given their lack of prior criminal records, they are unlikely to serve prison time since sentences under two years are typically suspended for first-time offenders.
La Liga celebrated the verdict as a significant step in the fight against racism within Spanish football, with President Javier Tebas emphasizing the league's commitment to prosecuting those who engage in such behavior.
The incident occurred on May 21, 2023, during a match between Real Madrid and Valencia at the Mestalla stadium. Home fans directed racist insults and made monkey chants towards Vinicius, prompting the player to call out the perpetrators and demand action from stadium officials before play could resume.
Court documents revealed that the defendants displayed contempt for Vinicius's skin color by making racist gestures and imitating primate behavior in front of a large audience, both at the stadium and through various media channels.
Real Madrid acknowledged the wrongdoing of the individuals involved and shared that they had issued a formal apology to Vinicius, the club, and anyone offended by their actions. The club reiterated its stance against racism and urged fans to refrain from any form of discrimination or intolerance.
