Court Nullifies Kano State Emirate Law 2024, Reinstates Former Emir

Justice Abdullahi Muhammad Liman of the Federal High Court in Kano has nullified the Kano State Emirate Law 2024, which dissolved the five Emirates in Kano State.

In his ruling on June 20, the judge dismissed all actions taken by the Kano State Government to repeal the Kano Emirates Council Law. This law was previously used by the state to dethrone the 15th Emir of Kano, Ado Bayero, and four others.

The judge also nullified the actions of the Kano government, ordering all parties to maintain the status quo.

Previously, the Kano House of Assembly had repealed the law that had established the 15th Emir and four additional emirate councils—Bichi, Rano, Karaye, and Gaya—under the administration of former governor Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje.

Current governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had implemented the repealed law by dethroning Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero as Emir of Kano in order to reinstall the dethroned 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi.

A kingmaker in the former Kano emirate, Aminu Babba Danagundi, the Sarkin Dawaki Babba, challenged the law in court. Through his counsel, Chikaosolu Ojukwu (SAN), Danagundi requested the court to declare the law null and void.
