Court of Appeal Orders Status Quo in Rivers State House of Assembly Crisis

The Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has directed all parties embroiled in the ongoing House of Assembly dispute to uphold the existing state of affairs.

This directive was issued in response to a case labeled CA/PH/198/2024 filed by Martin Chike Amaewhule & 24 others as appellants against Victor Oko-Jumbo and five others as defendants.

Amaewhule and his co-appellants sought the court's intervention to annul the Interlocutory Injunction granted by a High Court in Port Harcourt, which affirmed Oko-Jumbo as the speaker.

Justice Charles Wali of the State High Court had also instructed Amaewhule and the other 24 individuals to refrain from assuming the roles of speaker and lawmakers within the State Legislative Arm.

Conducted via Zoom, the panel advised all involved parties to maintain the status quo and deferred further proceedings until July 20th.

Furthermore, the appeal panel cautioned against taking any actions that could prejudice the case's merits, emphasizing the importance of serving notice of appeal to the defendants before the next adjourned date.
