The Delta State High Court in Asaba has handed down a death sentence to Inspector Ubi Ebri of the Delta State Police Command for murder.
Presided over by Justice C. D. Diai, the court convicted and sentenced Ebiri on Tuesday for the killing of Mr. Onyeka Ibeh, a phone dealer in Asaba.
Ibeh, a well-known figure in the phone trade in Asaba, was fatally shot on April 5, 2023, at a police checkpoint along Ugbolu road, with his pregnant wife present.
The tragic incident unfolded when the couple was stopped by the police team for a routine search. As the officers delayed attending to them, Ibeh opted to drive away. In response, the police inspector fired into the vehicle, fatally hitting Ibeh in the head, leading to his immediate demise.
The brutal killing sparked widespread outrage, prompting protests by youths in Asaba, demanding justice.
During the trial, the prosecution, led by Mr. E.H. Edema from the Ministry of Justice, revealed that the defendant was part of a police patrol team conducting a stop and search operation on that fateful day along Ugbolu Asaba Road.
In his remarks after the verdict, Edema stated, "Today's judgement marks a significant moment as justice has been duly served to the deceased and the wider society."
Mr. Ifeanyi Ibeh, the deceased's elder brother who witnessed the ruling, also expressed gratitude to the court for delivering justice to their family.
