Former presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections, Atiku Abubakar, has expressed concern over the disunity among opposition parties, stating that it poses a significant threat to Nigeria's democratic process.
In a statement released to mark this year's Democracy Day, Atiku highlighted the importance of opposition political parties coming together to form a coalition and outline a clear plan for good governance. He suggested that the failure to do so makes them complicit in the challenges facing the nation, even more so than the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Atiku commended the historical efforts that led to the establishment of democracy in Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts among political leaders to transition the nation from military rule to democracy. He lauded the uninterrupted electoral process spanning 25 years as an unprecedented achievement in the country's history.
The former presidential candidate congratulated both the people of Nigeria and the political class for their roles in nurturing democracy and emphasized the need for all stakeholders, including civil society, to continue their efforts in sustaining democratic governance.
However, Atiku expressed concern over the failure of opposition parties to fulfill their roles effectively, highlighting their inability to form alliances and coalitions as a significant challenge. He stressed the urgency for opposition parties to recognize the importance of unity and collaboration in advancing the interests of Nigeria and its citizens.
