Estate Developer Files N500 Million Lawsuit Against Police Chief Over Alleged Defamation

Estate developer Musa Saliu has taken legal action against the Inspector-General (I-G) of Police, alleging that he was wrongfully declared a wanted person in a land dispute published in their Special Police Gazette Bulletin. Saliu, represented by his lawyer Femi Motojesi, filed the N500 million lawsuit at the FCT High Court.

The lawsuit, invoking Sections 34, 35, 41, and 46 of the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights, accuses the police of violating Saliu’s fundamental rights. It argues that the police exceeded their authority by involving themselves in a civil matter involving Funmilola Florence Olorunfemi, a subscriber to Saliu’s estate under construction.

Saliu also seeks the unfreezing of his company's bank account and demands N500 million in damages for infringement of his privacy, personal liberty, and freedom of movement. Additionally, he requests a public apology from the police published in the Special Police Gazette Bulletin and two national newspapers.

The dispute originated from a payment made by Olorunfemi to subscribe to one of Saliu’s houses, which was disrupted when the FCT Department of Development Control demolished the estate. Despite Saliu’s efforts to resolve the issue, Olorunfemi sought police intervention to recover her money.

Saliu asserts that his relationship with Olorunfemi is purely civil and should not have attracted police involvement. He deems the police actions of summoning him for questioning, freezing his account, and declaring him wanted as unlawful.

The lawsuit awaits assignment to a judge as the legal battle unfolds.
