Father Found Guilty of Killing 5-Year-Old Son Over Paternity Dispute

In a tragic case, Ronald Ngobeni, 29, was found guilty by the South Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg, South Africa, on June 19, 2024, for the murder of his 5-year-old son, Khayone Rivoningo Capu. The incident occurred on October 7, 2022, in Tembisa.

According to Phindi Mjonondwane, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Ngobeni went to Ivory Park on the day of the crime, where his son lived with his mother and grandparents. He convinced the grandparents to let him take the boy to the mall, promising to buy him clothes and return him later.

Instead, Ngobeni brutally murdered his son and buried him in a shallow grave. The police began an investigation after the grandparents reported the child missing. Ngobeni falsely claimed that he had left the child with a vendor, but the vendor denied any involvement.

The decomposed body of Khayone was discovered on October 16, buried under a bridge with a fatal head injury. In court, Ngobeni refused to disclose the details of how he killed the boy. However, he testified that he was driven by anger after being insulted by the boy's mother and grandmother, who questioned the child's paternity. Ngobeni stated that they had told him to kill the child if it would make him happy, and he acted on their taunts.

The case has been postponed to July 15 for further arguments regarding mitigation and aggravation.
