Federal Workers Demand Payment of Outstanding Wage Awards from Government

Federal workers, represented by the Federal Workers Forum (FWF), have called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration to disburse their overdue three-month wage awards.

During an online meeting held on Saturday, the workers urged the federal government to pay the wage awards for March, April, and May. These awards were introduced following the removal of subsidies from Premium Motor Spirit (PMS).

In a communiqué issued after the meeting, the workers stressed that they are not slaves and deserve their rightful payments. The communiqué, provided by the National Coordinator, Comrade Andrew Emelieze, stated: "It has been nearly four months since the federal government stopped the payment of wage awards to federal workers. Despite repeated pleas to the federal government (FG) to resume the payments, all efforts have fallen on deaf ears."

The federal workers reviewed their previous request for the outstanding wage awards and noted the severe hardship they have faced since the fuel subsidy removal. They resolved to initiate continuous peaceful protests and demonstrations at all federal government secretariats nationwide, starting on June 24th, until their demands are met.

The workers also called for the support and solidarity of all industrial unions, the NLC, and the TUC. They condemned the delays in pension and gratuity payments to retired federal workers, emphasizing the fundamental right to protest and urging all federal workers to participate.

The communiqué concluded with a strong message to the government: "We are citizens, not slaves. Enough of this exploitation of the vulnerable. The government has cheated us enough. Pay us what you owe us. We have worked for it; we are not beggars."
