Singapore Airlines has announced compensation for passengers affected by extreme turbulence on flight SQ321, resulting in injuries and the tragic death of a 73-year-old man.
Geoff Kitchen, a British father-of-two, suffered a suspected heart attack during the ordeal, while other passengers and crew sustained skull, brain, and spine injuries.
The Singapore-bound Boeing 777-300ER, carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew, was diverted to Bangkok, where the injured received medical attention.
In a statement, Singapore Airlines (SIA) disclosed that passengers with minor injuries would receive $10,000 in compensation, with higher payouts being discussed for those with more severe injuries.
Passengers with serious injuries requiring long-term care are offered an advance payment of $25,000, part of the final compensation package tailored to individual circumstances.
SIA will refund fares for all passengers, irrespective of injury status, and provide delay compensation according to EU or UK regulations.
As of Tuesday, 11 passengers remained hospitalized in Bangkok.
The compensation follows regulations under the Montreal Convention, with amounts determined based on the severity of injuries.
SIA also provided immediate financial assistance to departing passengers and covered medical expenses, including arrangements for family members to travel to Bangkok.
The airline reaffirmed its commitment to supporting affected passengers from flight SQ321.
