Former Union Bank Employees Arrested by EFCC Over Alleged Embezzlement of N4.2 Million from Deceased Customer

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has apprehended two former employees of Union Bank in Makurdi for purportedly embezzling N4,199,500 from the account of a deceased customer.

According to Dele Oyewale, the EFCC's spokesperson, the suspects, Idah Ogoh and Agbo Okwute, were nabbed on Friday in Makurdi, Benue State, following a petition filed against them by the bank regarding fraudulent transactions on the late customer's account.

The illicit activities came to light when the family of the deceased approached the bank to inquire about the account balance for probate processing. Upon receiving a balance that differed from their expectations, the family raised concerns about unauthorized debits on the account.

Subsequent internal investigations by the bank revealed that a debit card had been obtained for the deceased customer's account on May 10, 2023. This card was procured by Ifah Ogoh, a Sales and Service Associate at the bank, with authorization from the bank on the same day.

Further inquiry uncovered that Ogoh handed over the procured card to another Sales and Service Associate, Agbo Okwute, who then delivered it to an accomplice for the purpose of transferring and withdrawing funds from the deceased's account. Allegedly, multiple withdrawals were made by the suspects through this accomplice.

Upon the conclusion of investigations, the suspects will face charges in court.
