Host nation Germany delivered an outstanding performance, securing a resounding 5-1 victory against a 10-man Scotland in the inaugural match of Euro 2024.
Germany swiftly asserted their dominance, breaking the deadlock just 10 minutes into the game. Joshua Kimmich orchestrated a brilliant pass to set up Florian Wirtz, who fired a precise low shot from the edge of the box to find the back of the net.
Nine minutes later, Germany extended their lead with a second goal. Kai Havertz provided an assist to Jamal Musiala, who capitalized on being unmarked in the box to score confidently.
The hosts further solidified their advantage by converting a penalty one minute into added time of the first half, following Ryan Porteous' dismissal for a reckless challenge in the box. Havertz expertly dispatched the penalty past Angus Gunn after cleverly waiting for the goalkeeper to commit.
In the 68th minute, Germany notched their fourth goal when Niclas Fullkrug seized upon a loose ball inside the box and rifled a shot into the top right corner, leaving the goalkeeper helpless.
Despite a late own goal by Antonio Rudiger in the 87th minute, Germany responded swiftly with their fifth goal just three minutes into added time. Emre Can received a precise pass from Thomas Muller at the edge of the penalty area and unleashed a well-placed strike into the right side of the goal, sealing a comprehensive victory for the hosts.
