Joseph Aloba, father of the late singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, also known as Mohbad, faced questioning on Monday by officers from the Force Criminal Investigation Department at Alagbon in Lagos State. This development follows a petition filed by Oba Saheed Elegushi, who accused Aloba of cyberbullying, cyberstalking, and criminal defamation.
Monisola Odumosu, head of the Aloba legal team, clarified the situation in a statement released on Tuesday. According to Odumosu, the allegations stem from an interview Joseph Aloba recently gave, which led to Oba Elegushi’s petition.
The statement highlighted, "Mr. Aloba was invited by the police and accompanied to the station by his legal representatives, Teri Wellington and Monisola Odumosu. Oba Saheed Elegushi’s petition claimed that during an interview with a London-based blogger, Mr. Aloba made defamatory remarks."
In the interview, it was alleged that Aloba said, "… his son was bullied and killed on the instruction of Oba Elegushi and that it was one Sam Larry that was sent to do the job…”
Odumosu emphasized that Aloba did not intend to defame or cyberbully Oba Elegushi, stating his primary goal was to seek justice for his deceased son. Aloba clarified that he lacked concrete evidence to support his claims against the monarch, aside from a petition written by his late son and their phone conversations.
The statement also noted that Oba Elegushi, present at the meeting, requested a retraction of the defamatory statements. Odumosu stressed that Aloba was neither arrested nor detained, but was granted bail without any complications.
“In fairness to Oba Elegushi, he only demanded the retraction of the defamatory statements made by Mr. Aloba on social media. Mr. Aloba was never arrested or detained. He was granted bail without stress. It is important to note that Mr. Aloba is still grieving the death of his son. He just lost a single star in the family firmament.”
Odumosu pointed out that grieving parents might make impulsive statements out of emotional distress, which can be misunderstood.
Mohbad, who died at the age of 27 on September 12, 2023, left behind a trail of controversies regarding the circumstances of his death. Formerly signed to Marlian Music, owned by Naira Marley, Mohbad parted ways with the label in February 2022. Following his death, the Lagos State Police Command formed a 13-man special investigation team on September 18, 2023, to probe the incident.
The controversy surrounding Mohbad's death led to the arrests of Naira Marley and Lagos socialite Balogun Eletu, also known as Sam Larry, among others. On September 21, 2023, Mohbad's body was exhumed for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, revealed in a live telephone call with Ahmad Isah, the host of the Brekete Family program, that a toxicology test was being conducted at NMS Labs in Pennsylvania, USA. However, a pathologist testified before the Coroner’s Court on May 15 that the autopsy could not determine Mohbad's cause of death due to the advanced decomposition of his body.
The tragic death of Mohbad continues to be a source of anguish and unresolved questions for his family and fans, with the ongoing investigations seeking to uncover the truth behind his untimely demise.
