The Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) in Abuja has fined MultiChoice Nigeria Limited N150 million for defying its jurisdiction by disregarding an order.
The three-member panel, led by Thomas Okusu, delivered the verdict on Friday, June 7.
Previously, the tribunal had prohibited MultiChoice from increasing subscription fees without adequate notice, following a lawsuit by Barrister Festus Onifade. Onifade argued that the eight-day notice provided for the price hike was insufficient.
Onifade sued DSTV, accusing the Pay-TV company of unjustly raising subscription fees without giving customers the required one-month notice and using this to seek interim orders.
In a unanimous decision, the tribunal ordered MultiChoice to pay the N150 million fine and to offer Nigerians a one-month free subscription to its DSTV and GOTV services.
The tribunal has scheduled July 3 to hear the substantive action filed against MultiChoice.
