Paul Merson Urges Portugal Manager to Bench Cristiano Ronaldo in Euro 2024 Opener

Arsenal icon Paul Merson has advised Portugal's head coach, Roberto Martinez, to consider benching team captain Cristiano Ronaldo for their initial two matches at Euro 2024.

Merson believes Martinez should make the tough decision to ensure Portugal secures qualification to the knockout stages before reintroducing the Al-Nassr forward for their last group game.

The Euro 2024 tournament is set to kick off this Friday in Germany.

Portugal finds itself in Group F alongside Turkey, Czech Republic, and Georgia.

Discussing Portugal's prospects in the tournament, Merson stated to Sportskeeda: "Portugal possesses a team with a wealth of experience, albeit one that is aging.

"Ronaldo continues to lead as captain, showcasing his goal-scoring prowess in Saudi Arabia, but the team will assess his form during training before making a decision on his inclusion.

"In my opinion, I would opt to rest him for the initial two matches, ensuring qualification is secured before reintroducing him for the final game."
