Operatives of the Ondo State Command have apprehended a 31-year-old man, Yusuf Adenoyin, in Isua Akoko, located in the Akoko South-East local government area, for possession of eight human skulls.
Adenoyin confessed to the crime, stating that he intended to raise N2 million with the skulls to pay for his sick mother's hospital treatment.
Paraded at the State Police headquarters on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, Adenoyin explained that he initially worked in the palm oil business but switched to distributing human skulls after discovering it was more profitable.
The suspect, originally from Kogi State, cited economic hardship and his desperation to save his mother’s life as reasons for his actions. He revealed that he was introduced to the trade by an herbalist he met on social media.
Adenoyin, who was en route to Osogbo, Osun State’s capital, at the time of his arrest, disclosed that his supplier is currently at large. He claimed to purchase skulls from a graveyard supplier for N20,000 each and resell them in Osun State for between N30,000 and N35,000.
The eight skulls found in his possession by the police were dry, with some containing what he claimed was a dog’s heart.
During a press briefing, the state Police Commissioner, Abayomi Oladipupo, detailed the arrest, stating that Adenoyin was detained on Monday by officers from the Police Safer Highway patrol at the Isua/Epinmi checkpoint. Adenoyin attempted to flee when the commercial vehicle he was in was stopped, but he was chased down and captured. A search of his baggage revealed the skulls wrapped in a polythene bag and hidden in a sack filled with garri.
Adenoyin admitted that this was the third set of skulls he was supplying to his clients. The Commissioner of Police assured that the suspect would be arraigned once the investigation is complete.
