President Tinubu Demands Repayment from Civil Servants Who Illegally Drew Salaries Abroad

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mandated that civil servants who relocated abroad while continuing to draw salaries without formally resigning must repay the wages they received during that period.

Speaking at the 2024 Civil Service Award and Gala Night, the culmination of the week-long 2024 Civil Service Week held at the Abuja Continental Hotel, Tinubu addressed this issue.

During the media parley marking the 2024 Civil Service Week, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation disclosed the situation involving employees who had moved abroad but continued to draw salaries without resigning. Measures have been put in place to address this issue.

On Saturday, Tinubu emphasized the need for accountability and restitution. “Those responsible must refund the money they fraudulently collected,” he stated. “Their supervisors and department heads must also face consequences for enabling this fraud under their watch.”

He stressed that the Civil Service cannot be a place where misconduct is tolerated without repercussions. “The civil service of any nation is too important for such misconduct to take root or be tolerated,” Tinubu said.

“The Civil Service is the foundation, the engine, the locomotive of government, essential for delivering public goods to citizens. As politicians, we are merely the drivers of the locomotives that you provide,” he added.
