Rising Tensions in Rivers State: Political Dispute and Security Concerns

Tensions persist in Rivers State as conflicting parties await the Court of Appeal's verdict. The dispute involves former speaker Martin Amaewhule and 24 others challenging the court-backed Speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo. Amaewhule's group seeks to halt the implementation of a high court ruling that removed them from office and nullify decisions made by Jumbo.

The crisis extends to the leadership of the 23 local government areas, with former chairmen, whose tenure expired, asserting their right to remain in office. Governor Fubara directed local government administrators to take charge, sparking clashes between supporters.

The violence led to casualties, prompting the Inspector General of Police to deploy forces. Governor Fubara swiftly appointed caretaker chairmen for the local government areas, but they were barred from their offices by the police. The APC called for a state of emergency, while civil groups warned against it, fearing further instability.

Meanwhile, planned protests and warnings from various groups add to the uncertainty, with authorities striving to maintain order amidst the political turmoil.
