Arrest Made in Tragic Student Abduction and Murder Case: AE-FUNAI Community Seeks Justice

The police have apprehended the primary suspect in the abduction and tragic murder of a student at Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu Alike Ikwo (AE-FUNAI) in Ebonyi State. Identified as Maxwell Okeke, the suspect was captured in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, following an intensive search by law enforcement.

Ogobuchi Uhuo, hailing from Ohankwu village, Ndufu-Alike, has long been a notorious figure, causing fear among students and locals alike, according to a reliable source familiar with the situation.

The victim, Okeke, was reported missing earlier this month, causing deep concern within the university community. Subsequently, his decomposed remains were discovered near a river in the vicinity.

In an official statement issued by the university's Public Relations Officer, Elom Iyke Ubochi, Uhuo was identified as the primary suspect in Okeke's abduction and subsequent demise. The incident occurred off-campus as Okeke was returning to his private hostel in Ohankwu village.

Efforts to secure Okeke's safe release were undertaken jointly by the University Management and law enforcement agencies. Regrettably, Okeke's lifeless body was recovered on June 17th, 2024, beneath the Ako stream bridge in Nwakpu village along the Ikwo/Abakaliki road.

Confirming the suspect's arrest, DSP Joshua Ukandu of the Ebonyi State Police Command assured that investigations were underway.

Meanwhile, students at the institution have expressed grievances over the mistreatment and assaults they face from members of the host community. Speaking anonymously, one student appealed for government intervention, highlighting the recurring violence inflicted upon students by local youths and urging authorities to address the situation promptly.
