Senate President Assures Readiness to Approve Presidential Jet Funds if Requested

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has indicated that the Senate is prepared to approve funds for the acquisition of a new presidential aircraft if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu submits a formal request. Akpabio made this statement during a plenary session on Thursday, emphasizing that no such request has been received yet.

Following a closed-door meeting with senators that lasted an hour, Akpabio assured the public, saying, “We will approve things that enhance the welfare of the people. Additionally, we recognize the responsibilities of the president. If his vehicle needs repairs, we will facilitate that; similarly, if his aircraft needs replacement, we will approve funding for it. However, there's no current request before us, so there’s no need for concern.”

He referenced recent incidents involving defective aircraft leading to tragic outcomes in other countries, underscoring the importance of ensuring the safety of Nigeria's leaders during air travel. Akpabio reaffirmed the Senate's commitment to responsible governance and stated, “Despite anticipatory concerns, the Senate will address any such future necessity if it arises. As of now, there is no proposal regarding this matter."

The emergency session convened by senators, interrupting their recess scheduled until July 2, 2024, was primarily to deliberate on a bill modifying the 2023 supplementary appropriation act, extending its validity until December 31, 2024, at the request of President Tinubu.
