State Governors Raise Concerns Over Proposed N60,000 Minimum Wage

State governors, convened under the umbrella of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF), have expressed skepticism regarding the feasibility of the proposed N60,000 minimum wage for workers. According to a statement issued by Halimah Salihu Ahmed, the NGF's Director of Media and Public Affairs, the governors argue that such a wage would strain state finances to the point where little would be left for developmental projects.

Highlighting the need for a comprehensive approach that addresses all sectors, including pensioners, the NGF emphasized the importance of reaching a sustainable and realistic agreement. They cautioned against hastily signing a document without considering its long-term implications.

The NGF stressed that the proposed N60,000 minimum wage is financially untenable and could lead some states to resort to borrowing monthly to meet salary obligations. They urged all stakeholders, particularly labour unions, to prioritize socioeconomic factors and work towards a fair and durable solution that considers the interests of all segments of society.

The statement comes amid ongoing negotiations between labour unions and the government over a new minimum wage. Labour unions had initially proposed higher figures, leading to a nationwide strike. While the government expressed commitment to a higher minimum wage, disagreements between state governors and other stakeholders persist.
