Two Arrested at Cape Town Airport for Aviation Law Violations After Onboard Threat Remarks

The South African police have confirmed the arrest of two suspects for violating aviation laws after making alarming comments about a potential threat onboard a flight at Cape Town International Airport.

The incident occurred on Thursday, June 6, around 5:30 PM on a flight headed to Johannesburg. According to police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe, the cabin crew was alerted to the comments, and emergency procedures were immediately activated.

"The pair allegedly made comments to a passenger suggesting there was a threat onboard that could endanger the safety of passengers and jeopardize operations on the aircraft," Mathe explained. "SAPS K9, bomb technicians, and the special task force safely removed the suspects from the aircraft, and the airline relocated the passengers."

Upon inspection, the police found two optic scopes for rifles, which are not classified as dangerous weapons under the Firearms Control Act. However, the men were arrested and charged with breaking aviation laws for making comments that unlawfully interfered with aircraft operations.

The police also issued a stern warning to passengers and airport users about the consequences of making threats or violent acts against crew members, which could jeopardize aircraft safety. Mathe added, "It is also an offense to communicate information known to be false to other passengers or aircraft crew. Disorderly behavior, being intoxicated, and behaving violently are also criminal offenses."
