Woman Allegedly Poisons Husband with Weed Killer Over Birthday Party Dispute

A woman who organized her husband's 50th birthday party allegedly turned the celebration into a nightmare after feeling he was ungrateful.

Michelle Peters, 47, is accused of poisoning her husband's Mountain Dew with Roundup weed killer because he was "not appreciative" of the festivities she arranged, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by Law & Crime.

Her husband contacted the Laclede County Sheriff’s Office on Monday, suspecting that his wife was poisoning him. He reported that his Mountain Dew tasted "odd" and "weird," and he became ill shortly after drinking it. Initially, he didn't think much of it, but after two weeks, he began coughing up brown or yellow mucus and experienced a sore throat, vomiting, and diarrhea.

He noted that Mountain Dew drinks he consumed outside their Missouri home tasted normal, but the two-liter bottles in his garage tasted off. This discrepancy led him to review CCTV footage, where he allegedly saw his wife mixing Roundup with the Mountain Dew and returning the tampered bottles to the garage fridge.

The affidavit states that the husband claimed, "Every time he put a new bottle in the refrigerator, Michelle would put Roundup in it." He provided a bottle of the contaminated liquid and the videotape to someone as evidence "in case he died from being poisoned."

When he told Peters he was feeling unwell, she allegedly responded that "he probably had COVID and to stay away from the grandkids."

During questioning, Peters initially said she was mixing the drinks to make "weed killer that she saw on Pinterest," but eventually admitted she "should have just divorced" him. "Michelle said she was mad at [her husband] because she had thrown him a 50th birthday party and he was not appreciative," police stated in the affidavit.

Michelle Peters has been charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action. She is being held at the Laclede County Detention Center without bond and is scheduled to appear in court on July 2.

Her husband suspects that Peters poisoned him either to collect his $500,000 life insurance payout or because she might be having an affair.
