Biden Condemns Supreme Court Ruling Granting Trump Immunity: Calls It a 'Dangerous Precedent

Joe Biden has strongly condemned the US Supreme Court's decision to grant Donald Trump broad immunity from criminal charges related to attempting to overturn the 2020 presidential election. He called the decision a "dangerous precedent" that undermines the fundamental principle of equality before the law.

In a five-minute speech from the White House, Biden criticized the 6-3 ruling for "undermining the rule of law" and delivering a "terrible disservice to the people of this nation" by making it less likely for Trump to be held legally accountable for inciting the January 6th, 2021, attack on the US Capitol. Biden echoed the sentiments of liberal Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who dissented from the ruling, stating, "I dissent."

Biden emphasized that the ruling leaves it to voters to decide if Trump, the leading Republican candidate for the upcoming presidential election, should be trusted with the presidency again. He underscored the principle that "no one is above the law, not even the president of the United States."

Biden warned that the Supreme Court's decision fundamentally changes this principle, creating a dangerous precedent where the president's actions are no longer constrained by law. He highlighted the importance of voters making a judgment about Trump's behavior and whether he can be trusted with the power of the presidency.

Biden also used the speech to address recent concerns within his own party about his candidacy following a poor debate performance against Trump. He drew a contrast between his respect for presidential limits and the potential for Trump to act without regard for the law if re-elected.

The speech provided Biden an opportunity to reassert his authority and criticize the Supreme Court's conservative majority, which he argued has been eroding long-established legal principles in the US. He cited the court's decisions affecting voting rights, civil rights, and women's reproductive rights as part of this broader trend.
