Borno State Police Arrest Legislative Aide and Supporters Over Aborted Rally

In a significant development, the Borno State Police Command, led by CP Yusufu Lawal, has detained Hon. Usman Aliyu (Babandi), a legislative aide to Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, along with two supporters, Mallam Ibrahim Adamu and Alhaji Tasiu Hassan Malgwi. The arrests were made in connection with a planned solidarity rally in Biu Local Government Area of Southern Borno Senatorial District. The event was intended to show support for Senator Ndume, who was recently removed from his position as Chief Whip in the Senate.

The proposed rally, initially scheduled for July 28, 2024, was canceled due to concerns over the fragile security situation and appeals from the Borno State Government urging against any form of protest. This comes amid a backdrop of recent comments by Senator Ndume on Arise TV criticizing the current administration's handling of hunger and insecurity, which led to his removal from the Chief Whip position by the APC National Working Committee.

The Borno State Police Command, responding to intelligence reports, intercepted and arrested the three individuals involved in organizing the rally. They have been transported to Maiduguri for further interrogation, with a court order already in place for their detention pending further legal action.

Senator Ndume, who is currently abroad on official duties, was unavailable for comment. His senior legislative aide, Junaid Jubrin Maiva, confirmed the cancellation of the rally, citing potential conflicts with other planned nationwide protests and concerns over possible disruptions.

The arrest has led to heightened tension among Senator Ndume's supporters, particularly with the nationwide protests set to unfold in the coming days. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Daso, confirmed the arrests, stating that the suspects are currently under investigation.

As the situation evolves, the community and political observers will be watching closely for further developments.
