Schumer, speaking at the conference, highlighted Harris' commitment to securing the nomination through grassroots efforts. “When I spoke with her on Sunday, she emphasized her desire to earn the nomination from the ground up,” Schumer stated. “With the process having played out, we are here to support Vice President Kamala Harris.”
Echoing Schumer's sentiments, Jeffries expressed his enthusiasm for Harris’ campaign. “Kamala Harris’ candidacy has invigorated Democrats and captured the nation's attention,” Jeffries said. “I am honored to endorse her as the next President of the United States.”
This endorsement from two of the highest-ranking Democratic leaders on Capitol Hill underscores the rapid consolidation of support around Harris. Since President Biden's withdrawal, Harris has garnered endorsements from over 40 Democratic senators and more than 100 House members. Additionally, influential figures such as former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and prominent leaders including Whip Katherine Clark and Chair Pete Aguilar, have voiced their support.
Harris' campaign has also received backing from key caucuses, including the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, the Congressional Black Caucus, and the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Despite initial hesitation from Schumer and Jeffries, the swift and decisive endorsement illustrates Harris' growing dominance within the party.
The wave of endorsements, coupled with support from potential challengers like Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, has solidified Harris' position as the leading candidate for the Democratic nomination, setting the stage for her campaign to gain momentum in the upcoming election cycle.
