The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, has announced a new policy prohibiting the admission of candidates under the age of 18 into tertiary institutions across the country.
Prof. Mamman made this announcement during the 2024 policy meeting of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
“JAMB is hereby notified that there is now a ban on underaged students, those under the age of 18, into our tertiary institutions from this 2024 admissions,” stated Mamman.
He explained that the Federal Government is considering setting 18 years as the minimum age for admission into universities and other tertiary institutions. This benchmark aligns with the 6-3-3-4 system of education, which is designed to ensure students are adequately prepared for higher education.
In addition, Mamman highlighted the Ministry of Education's initiative to incorporate skills training into the curriculum for pupils starting from primary school. This measure aims to provide students who are unable to gain admission into tertiary institutions with practical skills and knowledge to succeed in various fields.
