Cologne-Bonn Airport has suspended all flights following a protest by climate activists who glued themselves to a runway on Wednesday morning. The unauthorized access led to immediate flight disruptions as police intervened.
Several inbound flights have been rerouted to nearby airports in Düsseldorf, Hahn, Nuremberg, and Hannover. Passengers have been advised to check their flight status due to significant delays and cancellations.
The protest was organized by the group Last Generation, which claimed that five activists were involved in gluing themselves to the tarmac. Later reports indicated that three of the activists had been removed by police. The group is demanding that the German government push for a global phase-out of oil, gas, and coal by 2030 and has announced plans for similar protests at airports across Europe and North America.
In Finland, protesters blocked security gates at Helsinki Vantaa Airport, while in Oslo, three activists breached the perimeter fence at Gardermoen Airport but were removed within 30 minutes.
Cologne-Bonn is Germany’s sixth-busiest airport. In May, Munich Airport faced similar disruptions when six climate protesters glued themselves to a runway, resulting in 11 flight diversions and about 60 cancellations. Following that incident, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser indicated a review of airport security measures.
