Hours after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu signed the South East Development Commission (SEDC) Bill into law, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has urged his fellow Igbo people and Nigerians to forgo the planned nationwide protest scheduled for August 1.
In a press conference held in Abuja on Wednesday, Kalu called on the people of the South East to embrace the new development as a significant step towards addressing regional grievances and promoting national unity. He emphasized that the signing of the SEDC bill is a clear indication of President Tinubu’s commitment to equitable development and reconciliation in the region.
“To my fellow South Easterners, I implore you not to join the planned anti-government protests,” Kalu stated. He described the signing of the SEDC bill as a testament to the administration’s dedication to healing historical wounds and fostering socio-economic growth in the South East.
Kalu highlighted the potential of the SEDC to drive substantial progress in the region, noting that it will focus on the reconstruction of infrastructure damaged during the civil war, support agricultural development, and stimulate industrialization. He also stressed the importance of creating an environment of peace and unity to achieve these goals.
The Deputy Speaker urged all Nigerians to trust the ongoing policy processes rather than resorting to protests. He underscored the need for patience, asserting that the reforms initiated by President Tinubu’s administration will eventually address economic challenges and improve national stability.
“The reforms of this administration will take time, but they will bring about positive changes, including economic stabilization and job creation,” Kalu added. He also praised the cooperation of the South East governors and acknowledged their role in supporting the bill.
Kalu concluded by appealing to Nigerians to support the government’s efforts and avoid conflict. He reaffirmed the belief that through collective effort and unity, the nation can achieve its developmental goals and fulfill the aspirations of its people.
The South East Development Commission, established by the recently signed bill, will oversee the allocation of funds for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of infrastructure in the region, aiming to address the long-standing impact of the civil war.
