Diplomatic Tensions Rise After US Embassy Official's Fatal Accident in Zimbabwe And Ran Away

A severe diplomatic crisis has unfolded following a tragic incident involving Eric Kimpton, a second secretary at the US Embassy in Harare, Zimbabwe. On June 3, Kimpton's speeding vehicle struck and killed 11-year-old Ruvarashe Takamhanya in Dema, a suburb south of the capital. The young girl died instantly from the impact.

The case has sparked considerable outrage and demands for justice, especially after Kimpton reportedly left Zimbabwe less than 24 hours after the accident. Citing trauma and the need for counseling, Kimpton invoked diplomatic immunity and departed with his family. Despite initially indicating plans to return within two weeks, he has yet to come back.

Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi has expressed frustration over the stalled investigation. The authorities were initially informed that Kimpton needed rest but later discovered that he had left the country. The documentation and formalities required to proceed with the case have been hampered by his absence.

Deputy Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, George Charamba, has condemned the situation, asserting that Zimbabwe will not tolerate foreign diplomats evading accountability. Charamba emphasized that Zimbabwe is prepared to use all available means to ensure justice is achieved, suggesting that Kimpton's actions have transformed him from a diplomat into a fugitive.

The incident has reignited discussions on the limits of diplomatic immunity and has prompted calls for reforms to ensure that victims receive justice, regardless of the diplomatic status of those involved.
