In a recent policy reversal, Education Minister Prof. Tahir Mamman has retracted his earlier directive that only candidates aged 18 and above would be eligible for admission into tertiary institutions.
On Thursday, July 18, during an ongoing policy meeting organized by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Abuja, Mamman had initially announced that only applicants who had reached 18 years of age would be considered for admission.
However, the minister faced significant pushback from stakeholders present at the meeting. Critics argued that it would be unreasonable to deny admission to a 16-year-old student who had successfully passed the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and JAMB exams.
Responding to the concerns, Mamman revised his stance. He acknowledged the feedback and agreed that students aged 16 and above should be eligible for admission this year. The 18-year age requirement will now be implemented starting from next year.
