Donald Glover Announces Retirement of Childish Gambino Stage Name After New Album Release

American rapper and actor Donald Glover has announced he will be retiring his stage name, Childish Gambino, following the release of his sixth album, Bando Stone & the New World, which drops this Friday.

The 40-year-old artist, who has enjoyed a successful career under the Childish Gambino moniker for over a decade, revealed his decision in an interview with The New York Times. Glover explained that his choice to retire the name stems from a sense of personal fulfillment and evolving priorities.

“It really was just like, ‘Oh, it’s done,’” Glover said. “It’s not fulfilling. And I just felt like I didn’t need to build in this way anymore.” His shift in perspective, he noted, was influenced by his role as a father to three sons, Legend, Drake, and Donald Glover III, with his wife Michelle White.

Reflecting on his journey, Glover shared, “I’m not 25 anymore, standing in front of a boulder like, ‘This has to move.’ You give what you can, but there’s beauty everywhere in every moment. You don’t have to build it. You don’t have to search for it.”

Glover also emphasized how his definition of success has evolved. “Success to me is, honestly, being able to put out a wide-scale album that I would listen to,” he explained. For Bando Stone & the New World, he aimed to create music that resonates deeply with listeners and captures the collective experience of summer 2024.

Glover's career as Childish Gambino has been marked by critical acclaim, including six albums and five Grammy Awards. However, his latest move represents a personal shift towards valuing authentic experiences over traditional measures of success, such as chart performance.

“No one on their deathbed is going to look back and say, ‘Thank God I avoided being cringe,’” Glover added. “When I put my son on my shoulders, I feel deep joy. That’s real.”
