As Donald Trump shifts his campaign focus to Vice President Kamala Harris, the far-right online sphere has erupted with a disturbing surge of racist, misogynistic, and antisemitic attacks. This latest wave of vitriol targets Harris directly and extends to her Jewish husband, Doug Emhoff, and her stepdaughter, Ella Emhoff.
Following President Joe Biden’s unexpected decision to withdraw from the Democratic race and endorse Harris, high-profile Republicans, including Trump, have decried the move as an unwarranted “coup.” Trump’s accusations, made via his Truth Social app, claim that high-ranking Democrats orchestrated Biden’s ouster, labeling them as a “THREAT TO DEMOCRACY.”
On platforms favored by the far right, such as Gab, Telegram, and 4chan, these claims have fueled a barrage of offensive content. Insults and conspiracy theories about Harris’s success and personal life are rampant. Notably, Emhoff has become a target, with some far-right users using derogatory terms like “cuck” to disparage him for his marriage to Harris.
In early July, amid Emhoff’s COVID-19 diagnosis, far-right users on X (formerly Twitter) mocked him with the term “*CUCKVID” and other similar slurs. The disdain for Emhoff, a prominent lawyer and professor, has intensified as Harris’s presidential bid gains traction. Some posts have included vile comments about Emhoff’s Jewish heritage, referring to him with antisemitic slurs.
Ella Emhoff, Harris’s stepdaughter, has also been subjected to harassment. Since Harris’s candidacy became a reality, attacks against Ella have increased, with some posts on Gab and other forums using transphobic and homophobic slurs.
The antisemitic attacks have been particularly virulent. The far-right online ecosystem has propagated unfounded conspiracy theories, suggesting a “Jewish coup” involving Harris and maligning her support for pro-Israel groups. Some posts have used sexualized language to demean Harris, further illustrating the hateful rhetoric being spread.
This escalation in targeted attacks underscores a troubling trend of increasing extremism and bigotry in the political discourse surrounding high-profile figures, particularly those from marginalized communities. As Harris stands on the cusp of potentially becoming the first female U.S. president, the intensity of these attacks reflects broader societal tensions and the alarming impact of extremist narratives online.
