Federal High Court Dismisses Nnamdi Kanu's N1 Billion Suit Against Federal Government and DSS

A Federal High Court in Abuja has dismissed a N1 billion lawsuit brought by Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), against the Federal Government and the Department of State Services (DSS).

Justice James Omotoso ruled that Kanu did not provide evidence supporting his claim that the DSS had bugged his conversations with his lawyers or prevented them from taking notes during their discussions. Consequently, the court found no basis to support Kanu's allegation of being denied a fair hearing, and thus dismissed the suit for lack of merit.

Kanu, represented by his lawyer Aloy Ejimakor, had filed the N1 billion suit (FHC/ABJ/CS/1633/2023) seeking the enforcement of his fundamental rights while in detention. In the motion dated December 4, 2023, Kanu alleged that the seizure and copying of confidential legal documents by the DSS, meant for his defense preparation, violated his rights to legal representation. He also claimed that the DSS obstructed his lawyers from taking detailed notes during their consultations with him at the detention facility, thereby denying him adequate preparation for his defense by his chosen legal representatives
