Winston Nguyen, a former math teacher at Saint Ann’s School in Brooklyn Heights and a past "Jeopardy!" champion, has surrendered to authorities in connection with child pornography charges. Nguyen turned himself in to Brooklyn prosecutors on Thursday, July 25, following allegations that he engaged in inappropriate online interactions with minors.
Nguyen, 39, faces charges of using a child in a sexual performance and promoting a sexual performance by a child. He was arraigned in Brooklyn Criminal Court later that afternoon.
Reports from The New York Times reveal that Nguyen is accused of soliciting explicit images from six minors—five girls and one boy—from four different schools. Allegedly, Nguyen posed as a teenager on social media to coerce students into sending sexually explicit images on at least 11 occasions.
Nguyen's initial arrest took place at Saint Ann’s School, where he was teaching at the time. He was subsequently released while authorities investigated his personal devices. During this investigation, he was placed on administrative leave from his teaching position.
Nguyen is also recognized for his two appearances on "Jeopardy!" in 2014. This legal issue adds to his troubled past; in 2017, he was arrested and served time at Rikers Island for stealing over $300,000 from an elderly couple.
