Frankfurt Airport Disruptions: Climate Activists Protest on Runway

Frankfurt Airport, Germany’s busiest travel hub, faced significant disruptions on Wednesday as climate activists staged a protest near its runways. The demonstration led to a temporary suspension of flights, causing major travel delays.

The airport initially advised passengers to avoid coming to the airport and to check their flight statuses due to the ongoing disruptions. The airport's social media post regarding the suspension was later removed, with an update indicating that flight operations were gradually resuming.

According to a police spokesperson, efforts were underway to remove the activists from the tarmac. The protest was organized by the climate activist group Letzte Generation, which claimed that six of its members had cut through the airport's wire fence using pincers and reached the runway area on foot, bicycles, and skateboards. A photograph from the group showed a protester sitting on the runway with a banner reading “oil kills.”

The group’s demands include urging the German government to push for a global agreement to phase out oil, gas, and coal by 2030. This protest is part of a broader campaign that has seen similar actions in other European and North American locations, with the group targeting major airports and infrastructure.

On the same day, Cologne-Bonn Airport, Germany’s sixth-largest, also experienced flight cancellations for several hours due to activists gluing themselves to a runway. These actions reflect growing global concern over aviation’s role in carbon emissions, which account for approximately 2.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions—more than the combined annual carbon footprint of Brazil and France.

Authorities are working to manage the disruptions and address the activists' concerns while minimizing impact on airport operations and passenger travel.
