On Wednesday, the House of Representatives unanimously approved the creation of a taskforce to investigate the security breaches surrounding the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. The move highlights the bipartisan outrage following the shooting at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, where Trump narrowly escaped harm. The attack resulted in one fatality and left two others seriously injured.
The taskforce will consist of 13 members, including seven Republicans and six Democrats, and will be tasked with uncovering the security failures on the day of the attempted assassination. It will also recommend measures to prevent such incidents in the future. The group is expected to issue a final report by December 13 and has the authority to issue subpoenas.
The bill establishing the taskforce was sponsored by Republican Congressman Mike Kelly, who represents Butler and was present at the rally with his family. "My community is grieving and shocked by the events in our backyard," Kelly stated. "The people of Butler and the United States deserve answers."
Kelly expressed concerns about the security of the rally site prior to the event, citing it as potentially problematic for such a large gathering. He emphasized that the taskforce represents an opportunity for lawmakers to demonstrate their ability to address crises collaboratively.
In response to the shooting, House committees have already conducted three hearings. The resignation of Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle on Tuesday followed a contentious session where she was heavily criticized by lawmakers for the security lapses. Cheatle described the incident as the Secret Service’s “most significant operational failure” in decades but faced criticism for her lack of detailed responses during the hearings.
Congressman Jim McGovern, a Massachusetts Democrat, underscored the need for a thorough investigation, stating, “We need to know what happened. We need to get to the truth. We need to prevent this from ever, ever happening again.” The bipartisan support for the taskforce reflects a shared commitment to addressing the serious security concerns raised by the incident.
