House of Representatives Calls for Immediate Revocation and Reassignment of East-West Road Contract

The House of Representatives has called on the Minister of Works, David Umahi, to revoke the contract awarded to Rock Result Nigeria Limited for the construction of the flooded East-West Road and reassign it to a more capable company. This decision followed a motion titled “Need to Revoke the Contract for the Construction of Flooded Sections of the East-West Road Connecting Major Communities in Bayelsa State,” introduced by Obok Oforjil during a plenary session in Abuja.

Oforjil emphasized that the East-West Road is a critical infrastructure, significantly contributing to Nigeria's economic and social development by connecting key regions and facilitating trade, commerce, and cultural exchange. He explained that the Federal Ministry of Works had contracted Rock Result Nigeria Limited to construct box culverts to repair the flooded Kaiama-Ahoada section of the road. However, the company has failed to execute the project, resulting in traffic disruptions and fatalities.

He pointed out that despite praise from the current Minister of Works during an inspection tour on April 11, 2024, the contractor has not made any progress. The dilapidated condition of the road, particularly in sections such as Iheke in Ahoada East Local Government of Rivers State and Aven in Patani and Umeh in Isoko South Local Government Areas of Delta State, remains a significant concern.

Oforjil also expressed worry that the Federal Government is prioritizing the coastal road over the crucial East-West Road, which is vital for Nigeria’s economic survival. Consequently, the House has mandated the Committee on Works to ensure compliance with the directive to reassign the contract.
