The House of Representatives Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has called on the Abuja Investment Company Limited (AICL) to collaborate exclusively with competent and committed partners in managing infrastructure within the FCT. This recommendation was made during a recent interactive session with AICL, led by Group Managing Director Moreen Tamuno.
Committee Chairman Muktar Betara expressed disappointment with past management of FCT infrastructure but expressed optimism for improvement under the new ministerial leadership. Betara emphasized the need for effective partnerships, advising AICL to sever ties with any partners unwilling or unable to contribute effectively. He assured the committee’s support for the AICL and the broader goals of the FCT.
“I will advise you, anybody that you’re not ready to work with, remove the person so that you can work well,” Betara stated. “The Committee is ready to support you and support FCT in general.”
Timilehin Adelegbe, a committee member and lawmaker from Ondo State, echoed Betara’s sentiments, urging AICL to conduct a comprehensive audit of its staff to identify and address any inefficiencies.
“What we need as a House is to encourage you and also urge you to do a holistic audit of staff who may be dragging you back which is very very important,” Adelegbe advised.
Regina Akume, a member from Benue State, stressed the importance of rejecting the “Nigerian factor” of neglecting government responsibilities. She urged AICL to adopt a proactive approach and reject any complacency.
“Before, we see a spirit of ‘it is not my problem, it’s not my business, it’s government’s business’; government is for all of us, so put all the broken pieces together. There’s so much laxity and it’s not right,” Akume said.
In response, Dr. Moreen Tamuno highlighted AICL’s efforts to address revenue leakages and improve financial management. She acknowledged the challenges but expressed a commitment to making substantial progress in repositioning the FCT.
“We are definitely building bridges, we are looking at how to reposition the FCT and we are making progress,” Dr. Tamuno assured.
The session underscored the committee’s dedication to enhancing infrastructure management and ensuring that the FCT’s development needs are effectively met.
