House of Representatives to Cut Salaries by 50% to Support Food Security Initiatives

On Thursday, July 18, the House of Representatives resolved to support the Federal Government with a substantial financial contribution to combat the rising cost of food in Nigeria. The decision involves a commitment to cut their salaries by 50% for six months, amounting to a total of ₦648 million.

This resolution came after Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu proposed an amendment to a motion originally moved by Rep. Isiaka Ayokunle. The initial motion sought to dissuade proponents of planned nationwide protests from pursuing their demonstrations, urging instead for dialogue with the government.

Kalu's amendment advocated for the salary reduction of lawmakers, who currently receive ₦600,000 monthly. The 50% cut will see each of the 360 legislators contributing ₦108 million monthly, culminating in a total of ₦648 million over the six-month period.

The funds are intended to support government initiatives aimed at addressing the high cost of food and alleviating the economic hardships faced by many Nigerians. The motion was adopted and referred to the committees on Humanitarian Affairs, Finance, and Budget for further action and implementation.

This significant gesture reflects the House of Representatives' commitment to addressing food insecurity and supporting the welfare of Nigerians during these challenging times.
