Inspector General of Police Urges Protest Organizers to Submit Details for August Demonstrations

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun has called on organizers of the upcoming August 1–10 protests to submit detailed information to the commissioners of police in their respective states. This directive aims to ensure that the protests, planned by various groups including the Take It Back Movement, are conducted peacefully and with respect for public safety.

Egbetokun made the announcement during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday. His request comes in response to a notification from human rights activist Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, who had sought protection for the protestors from the police and the Department of State Services (DSS).

In his statement, IGP Egbetokun emphasized the importance of facilitating a safe and orderly protest. He urged organizers to provide the following details to local police commissioners:

  1. Proposed protest routes and assembly points.
  2. Expected duration of the protest.
  3. Names and contact details of protest leaders and organizers.

"We acknowledge the constitutional right of Nigerian citizens to peaceful assembly and protest," Egbetokun said. "However, to ensure public safety and order, it is crucial that all groups planning to protest provide the necessary information."

The DSS has also expressed concerns about the upcoming protests. In a statement issued on Thursday, DSS spokesman Peter Afunanya revealed that some individuals are reportedly planning to exploit the protests to create chaos and discredit the federal and state governments. Afunanya warned that these plotters aim to stir unrest and undermine the legitimacy of the authorities.

In light of these developments, the IGP's call for detailed protest plans is intended to mitigate potential disruptions and prevent any escalation of violence. By ensuring that organizers collaborate with local law enforcement, authorities hope to balance the public's right to protest with the need for maintaining peace and security.
