Kano Judge Prohibits Lawyers from Media Interviews Amidst Emirship Dispute

Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu of the Kano State High Court, Audu Bako Secretariat, on Thursday issued an order prohibiting lawyers from granting interviews to journalists before, during, and after her judgments in the ongoing Kano emirship dispute.

The judge instructed counsels representing both the applicants and respondents to refrain from speaking to the press. This directive arose from what she described as conflicting interpretations of her rulings and judgments by journalists after interviewing lawyers.

Justice Aliyu stated that while she cannot prevent the press from performing their duties, she has the authority to restrict lawyers from engaging with the media.

"It is my order for you (lawyers) not to grant any interview with the press before and even after my ruling on the argument on the pending appeal on the stay of proceedings filed by the first respondent. Even if I cannot stop the journalists from doing their jobs, I have the power to stop you (lawyers), and that is my order," she declared.

The case involves the Kano State Attorney General, the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly, and the Kano State House of Assembly (applicants), who have sought the court's intervention to prevent the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, and four others from identifying themselves as Emirs. The other respondents in the case include Alhaji Nasiru Ado-Bayero (former Emir of Bichi), Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar II (former Emir of Karaye), Alhaji Kabiru Muhammad-Inuwa (former Emir of Rano), and Alhaji Aliyu Ibrahim (former Emir of Gaya). Additional respondents include the Inspector General of Police, the Director of the Department of Security Service, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and the Nigerian Army.
