Oba Lukman Adebambo, the Gbadewolu of Araromi in Lagos, has issued a stern warning to those planning protests in the state. The monarch expressed concern that many protesters may not be indigenous to Lagos and emphasized the need for peaceful demonstrations.
In an interview with The Nation, Oba Adebambo highlighted the detrimental impact of protests on Lagos' infrastructure. "Whenever there is a protest, infrastructure in Lagos State bears the brunt. People should remember that Lagos State accommodates all, and indigenes should not be made to regret their hospitable gesture," he said.
The Oba called for constructive and non-destructive methods of expressing grievances, noting that while hardship is a widespread issue, protests are unlikely to resolve the crisis. Reflecting on the aftermath of the #EndSARS protests, he pointed out the extensive damage to public and private properties, which has led to significant costs for repairs and hindered progress.
"Protest is not going to solve the crisis at hand," Oba Adebambo cautioned. "The destruction from past protests, including the recent #EndSARS incident, has had lasting repercussions. Funds that could have been used for other essential projects are now diverted to refurbishing damaged properties."
The Oba’s remarks underline the need for peaceful approaches to address grievances and maintain the integrity of Lagos' infrastructure.
