London Court Sentences Mohammed Basheeru to 12 Years for Sydenham Bank Robbery

Mohammed Basheeru, also known as Sonni Reid, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for his involvement in an armed robbery at a bank in Sydenham, London. The 44-year-old from Croydon appeared at Woolwich Crown Court on Friday, 28th June, where he pleaded guilty to the robbery.

Police responded to the armed robbery at a high street bank in Sydenham on Monday, 14th February, after receiving reports at 11:26hrs. Two masked men entered the bank, threatened the cashier with a gun, and stole a sum of money before fleeing down Venner Road. A witness observed them leaving the scene.

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police's Flying Squad swiftly obtained CCTV footage showing the suspects near the bank shortly before the robbery. The footage also captured them leaving the area in a vehicle. Further investigation revealed that the vehicle had picked up Basheeru from his residence and was used in the commission of the crime.

Identification of Basheeru was aided by distinctive features observed in the CCTV footage, including a slight deformity on his left ear, which matched previous police records.

Basheeru initially denied involvement but was charged after further investigation and subsequently pleaded guilty at Woolwich Crown Court on 9th April 2024.

In a related case, Dorian Rankine, 43, of Beulah Road, Thornton Heath, was sentenced to ten years in prison after pleading guilty to robbery at Inner London Crown Court on Friday, 27th January 2023. Rankine was involved in the Sydenham bank robbery as well as two other unrelated robberies.

Detective Constable Craig Prout from the Flying Squad described the robbery as a terrifying experience for the victims and expressed gratitude for the community's support in bringing both offenders to justice.
