U.S. Consul General in Lagos Affirms Strong Bilateral Ties with Nigeria during Independence Day Celebration


 Will Stevens, the U.S. Consul General in Lagos, reaffirmed America’s dedication to strengthening bilateral relations with Nigeria during the celebration of America’s 248th Independence Day organized by the U.S. Consulate in Lagos on Monday.

Stevens emphasized the deep-rooted values and histories shared by Nigeria and the U.S., highlighting them as exemplary models to the world. He stated, "Today is a day for friends and families to celebrate America’s founding, reflect on our past, present, and future, and reaffirm the principles that have guided our journey."

Highlighting the mutual commitment to democratic principles, Stevens noted, "Nigeria and the U.S. are committed to government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Democracy is a journey where elected officials and citizens collaborate to address challenges and improve society."

He underscored Nigeria and the U.S. as natural allies, partners, and friends on critical issues globally and across the continent. Stevens also acknowledged the significant attention the U.S. government has given to Nigeria in 2024, underscoring the depth of the bilateral partnership.

Recognizing the Nigerian diaspora, Stevens praised the over 700,000 Nigerian Americans as one of the most successful diaspora groups in the U.S., contributing immensely to various sectors.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State applauded the robust relationship between Nigeria and the U.S., emphasizing the potential for further collaboration in culture, arts, technology, politics, innovation, and creativity.

Sanwo-Olu commended Consul General Stevens for his impactful contributions in Lagos, particularly in fostering growth in the tech and creative industries. He encouraged Nigerians to remain resilient despite challenges, drawing parallels with America's history of overcoming adversity.

"As Nigerians, let us stand tall and affirm that we will contribute our utmost to excel globally," Sanwo-Olu concluded.
