Melissa Fay Calumpit, 35, and her mother, Rosalie Lynn Morris, are facing serious charges after allegedly conspiring to murder Calumpit’s estranged husband, Travis Haywood Calumpit, 37, at a campground in Idaho.
On July 12, Travis Calumpit, who was hoping to rekindle his relationship with Melissa, was found dead with a gunshot wound to the chest at Martin’s Landing, a campground near the Snake River. The victim was discovered face down with blood near his left side.
Earlier that day, Travis had informed his stepfather about plans to meet Melissa at the campgrounds with hopes of reconciling. Instead, Melissa is accused of leading him to a secluded area where he was killed, following a plan devised with her mother, Morris.
During the investigation, Melissa initially denied involvement, claiming she was in Nevada with her mother. However, her story changed after police presented dashcam footage showing her at the scene. Melissa later claimed she acted in self-defense after Travis raped her, although her account shifted multiple times. She alleged she struck Travis with a rock and then shot him when he attacked her.
Morris allegedly admitted to planning the murder with her daughter during a family meeting held the day before the incident. She reportedly searched for an unregistered firearm and intended to carry out the murder herself but later decided Melissa should be involved. Morris claimed she was hiding nearby when she heard the gunshot and described Travis as an abusive drug addict with mental health issues.
Both Melissa Calumpit and Morris face charges of first-degree murder and destruction of evidence. Morris is also charged under an aiding and abetting theory. They are being held on a $2 million bond each.
