A tragic plane crash in Kathmandu, Nepal, on Wednesday resulted in the deaths of at least 18 people. The accident occurred during takeoff from Tribhuvan International Airport when the aircraft, operated by Saurya Airlines, caught fire. The pilot, the sole survivor, is currently receiving medical treatment in hospital.
The flight, which was a test run, had 19 people onboard, including technical staff and two crew members. The plane was en route to Pokhara, a well-known tourist destination.
Videos of the incident showed the aircraft engulfed in flames and smoke. Emergency services, including fire engines and ambulances, responded promptly to the scene. The crash occurred around 11:15 AM local time (05:30 GMT), shortly after the plane took off. The Nepal Civil Aviation Authority reported that the plane veered right and crashed on the east side of the runway.
Rescue operations began immediately, and the fire was eventually brought under control. The authorities confirmed the recovery of 18 bodies and the rescue of the injured pilot.
Nepal has faced criticism for its air safety record in recent years. In January 2023, a Yeti Airlines crash killed at least 72 people, attributed to a pilot error involving the power cut-off.
Saurya Airlines operates flights to five destinations within Nepal and has a fleet of three Bombardier CRJ-200 jets.
